The Learning Behaviors Measure

This measure was developed to shift the study of learning from short-term or self-reported outcomes towards behaviors that change long-term memory. Through directly observing how learners act while in the process of learning, I find that learning is not one thing. It is series of independent behaviors and that engaging in one behavior does not predict engagement in subsequent behaviors.
Taking on a challenge
Participants are given the choice between two activities. In one, they are told that they will be encountering information they likely already know and the task will be easy. In the other, they are told they will be encountering information that is likely new to them and the task will be difficult. [regardless of choice they are all given the same task]
Acquire Information
Participants are given learning materials and the measure tracks how much time they spend reading (controlling for individual reading rate).
Exploring meaningful context
Throughout the learning materials are hyperlinks to contextual information. The measure tracks how many links learners click and how much time they spend reading them.
Continual practice
Participants are asked to apply their newly formed knowledge in a practical task. The task is designed to be difficult enough that everyone will fail on the first try. The measure tracks whether they try again after failing and the total number of attempts.
Critical Reflection
Participants are given the choice to reflect on their learning. The measure tracks whether they choose to reflect and what they write.
